Benefits of Hiring a Postpartum Doula

  • by

What is a postpartum doula? If you are a new parent, you are likely experiencing a wide range of emotions and challenges as you adjust to life with your little one. Fortunately, there is a trained professional who can help- a doula! Many people think that a doula is only available for pregnancy and birth. This is a common misconception. A postpartum doula is available to help you transition into parenthood with confidence and ease.

A postpartum doula is a trained professional who provides physical hands-on care; as well as emotional and informational support during the early weeks and months following the birth of your baby.

There are many benefits to hiring a postpartum doula. For example:

    • Reduced Stress and Anxiety. Postpartum doulas can help by providing practical hands-on care as well as emotional and informational support during a time when many new parents are experiencing a range of emotions all while trying to meet the on-demand needs of their newborn.
    • Practical Support. Your doula will help make sure that the new mom is feeling supported.  This might include tasks like newborn care, meal preparation, and light housekeeping so that families have time to attend to their own self-care needs as well as restorative sleep for a healthy recovery.
    • Postpartum Support.  Your doula can provide support and resources to help with postpartum recovery (both physical and emotional), breastfeeding support, and general newborn care.
    • Education and Resources.  As doulas, we have a wealth of information to share including local resources in the community.  This might include chiropractic care, lactation support, yoga, meditation, and massage services just to name a few.
    • Emotional Support.  Sometimes, a new mom (or dad) needs a compassionate, non-judgmental listening ear to help them process their feelings as they navigate this new period of transition.  Your doula is well versed in using active listening skills to help process feelings of overwhelm and uncertainty when it comes to adjusting to life with your newborn.
